Some of the benefits of nuclear chemistry and science include radio chemistry which is used in medicine to treat cancerous cells. It is used in diagnostic techniques, like x-rays and scans and tracers. Radioactivity is used to diagnose and treat thyroid conditions. (See fig.1, X-ray of a hand)
There are also more medical uses for Nuclear chemistry In technology we use radiation to generate electricity in power plants. Radon used in smoke detectors , radon detectors for home and earthquakes, electronics, nuclear batteries, glow in the dark watches, and clocks. ( See fig.2, smoke detector that uses radon) Nuclear plants are not very geographically limited due to the fact that they do not require a lot of space such as a wind farm. Although they must be built near a large body of water. Nuclear power plants do not contribute to carbon emissions meaning they do not contribute to global warming. Nuclear power plants to not produce smoke particles or emit gasses that contribute to acid rain. Nuclear energy is very concentrated so therefor they produce a lot of energy from a small mass of fuel. (See fig.3, nuclear power plant) Nuclear energy is reliable and does not depend on the weather. Nuclear power produces a small amount of waste, although it is still radioactive. Finally, we can control the output of energy from a nuclear power plant to fit our needs. (See fig.4, process of creating nuclear energy) |
